This litter is the second one for our small kennel. Both parents have passed their basic required health clearances as well as several additional ones that we make mandatory for our own breeding dogs. The combined hip index for this litter is currently sitting at 213, which is well above the ideal 200 minimum set out by the SPJ. When it comes to epilepsy, something that happens within the breed, the litters expected epilepsy score is currently sitting at 0.219, which is well below the ideal 0.6 maximum set out by the SPJ. Also, this combination will produce puppies that fit within the written standard for colours and traits. LTV and other spinal problems are starting to be a large problem within the breed with ~45% of dogs affected by some level of an LTV score. Vila has an LTV1 (the lowest level possible) due to a shortened L7 vertebrae, Pikki has a clear LTV0.
Vila hasn't had much of a show career, yet, just due to scheduling and our hope to give her body time to mature into the beautiful dog she has become. In the two show weekend she has participated in during the spring of 2024 she had won Best of Breed once and Best of Opposite six times, overall earning her 2 of the 10 points needed for her Canadian Championship. She is expected to enter the rings once again come 2025.
Pikki on the other hand has had a wonderful show career, for his young age. He completed his Canadian championship with ease, including some group placements which are challenging to attain for a rare breed. He is also the first KBD in history, and to date, to have earned his Canadian Grand Championship. While overseas in late 2023 he also had great success in the show ring. He earned his Finnish Junior Championship in two days making him the fastest KBD to earn this title in history and the first non nordic living KBD to earn this title. During that trip he also earned his 2 CAC's as well as a CACIB-J and a CACIB, these will lay the foundation for him to earn his Finnish CH as well as his C.I.E in the future.
Although we do not actively hunt with Vila or Pikki here in Canada, they have shown interest in game several times. Pikki has shown interest in large game here at home; with the many moose, bear, and deer that cross our property. He also had a successful time in Finland last fall (2023) where he barked at a machine moose and several live moose in the forest. Pikki also had a successful moose trial while in Finland where he earned 34 points, sadly that wasn't enough for a prized result as the moose took off running several KM and after hours of tracking/following Pikki ran out of time.
Structurally these two dogs compliment each other beautifully, with very few structural faults between them. Vila has a slightly wide set ear whereas Pikki has a model head and Pikki is on the upper end of the standard in both weight and height whereas Vila is right at the middle of the standard. From this pairing we are expecting attractive dogs that fit within the standard both in structure and size.
Behaviourally speaking Pikki is a confident dog, and shows no aggression towards other dogs. He has been great with all people and responds well to commands and body language. His recall is just as expected for the breed, poor, although it is not something we specifically work on with our dogs. Pikki is happy to be with his people but he is more than willing to depart on his own adventures into the forest to bark at any game he can find. Vila is quite different from Pikki, she is very eager to work one on one with her person and has been easy to train obedience to (when considering the breed as a whole). She learns very quickly and prefers to stay nearby, making her the perfect companion in anything we pursue together. We are hoping this pairing produces well rounded, confident, and easy to train, dogs that work as a team with their people in whatever avenue they decide to pursue.
Finally, being that the Karelian Bear Dog population and diversity is so low it is vital to produce litters that are diverse in genetics and this combination does just that with a pedigree COI of 2.44% and a KVP of 0.56 over 8 generations; we can also easily see the pedigree all the way back to the 1950's. Their shared pedigree can be seen HERE.
We hope that a number of these puppies will have the opportunity to work large game and/or show in the conformation ring in whichever part of the world they may end up in.

All the puppies will come with the following:
-CKC registration (AKC FSS registration will be done only on puppies moving to the USA and participating in shows/trials)
-DNA tested for proof of non-affected status of the current known health markers in the breed.
-First vaccine, done at ~8 weeks of age. Additional vaccines will be done if the puppies will be picked up at a later date.
-Microchip identification
-Several deworming's
-Puppy pack to go home with
-Pet insurance trial (4 weeks of coverage)
-Lifetime breeder support
**Puppies moving to the USA will have additional items on an as needed basis due to the 6 month minimum age; to be discussed with each home individually.
All of our puppies are sold on a limited registration and a co-ownership until spayed/neutered; unless otherwise agreed upon.
